FAQ
Even after a quality repair, a vehicle that’s been in an accident is often worth less than it was before the loss. That loss in market value is called Diminished Value (DV).
Buyers, dealers, and appraisal tools often factor in:
- Accident history
- Structural/major repairs and replacement panels
- Paintwork, ADAS/safety system involvement, and part types
- Perceived risk and “stigma” in the resale market
Many auto insurance policies include an Appraisal Clause (also called Right to Appraisal). This is a built-in dispute process used when you and the insurance company disagree on:
- The amount of vehicle damages/repair cost, or
- The value of a total loss (Actual Cash Value / ACV)
If the clause applies, the process generally works like this:
- You hire your own appraiser
- The insurance company hires their appraiser
- The two appraisers review the facts (estimate, photos, procedures, invoices, valuation data, etc.) and try to agree on the amount
- If they can’t agree, most policies allow an agreed-upon umpire to resolve the difference (process varies by policy)
